About the KVK medal:
The War Merit Cross (KVK) could be awarded to anyone, male or female, who contributed to the war effort because of courage and service.
The order was necessary to be able to reward merits that could not be honored with the Order of the Iron Cross in an appropriate manner. The crosses were awarded with and without swords. The swords were added for special services “face to face with the enemy” while the ordinary crosses were intended for merit for the war effort where one did not come into contact with the enemy.
