German military identification tag (Erkennungsmarke) from the Second World War. The inscriptions provide information about the soldier and his unit:

102 – The soldier’s personal service number within his unit.14./J.R. 167 – Indicates the 14th Company of Infantry Regiment 167 (Infanterie-Regiment 167). The 14th Company was typically the regiment’s anti-tank company (Panzerabwehr-Kompanie).O – The soldier’s blood group (Type O).

The tag is fitted with perforation lines so that, in the event of the soldier’s death, the upper half could remain with the body while the lower half was removed and submitted for administrative and casualty reporting purposes.
