German War Merit Medal from the Second World War, complete with its original ribbon and issue envelope.
The medal was instituted on August 19, 1940 by Adolf Hitler.
The award was given to civilians (both German and non-German) for outstanding services in connection with the war effort, such as significantly exceeding work quotas in factories.
The obverse depicts a Maltese cross with a swastika surrounded by an oak wreath; the reverse depicts the text "Für Kriegs-verdienst 1939" (For War Merit 1939).
Approximately 4.9 million of these medals were awarded by the end of the war.
