The Verwundetenabzeichen (Wounded Medal) was first instituted in 1918 during World War I and reinstated by Hitler in 1939. It was one of the most common awards in the Third Reich, yet held significant personal significance for the recipient: it was visible proof that one had truly suffered at the front.

  • Recipient name: Ogfr. (Obergefreiter) Ludwig Braun.

  • Unit: 16. Luftwaffen-Feld-Regiment 1 (a field regiment of the Luftwaffe that was deployed as ground troops).

  • Award: Verwundetenabzeichen in Schwarz (the Verwundetenabzeichen in black).

    • This was the Wound Badge in black, awarded for being wounded once or twice by enemy action.

    • There were also silver (3–4 injuries) and gold variants (5 or more, or very serious injuries).

  • Date of injury: March 21, 1942.

  • Place of award: Koblenz, 14 April 1942.

  • Signed by: a senior physician and deputy commander.

  • Stamp: "Sanitätsbereich Koblenz" with the Reichsadler
