The Verwundetenabzeichen (Wounded Medal) was first instituted in 1918 during World War I and reinstated by Hitler in 1939. It was one of the most common awards in the Third Reich, yet held significant personal significance for the recipient: it was visible proof that one had truly suffered at the front.
