This medal was instituted on May 26, 1929, by the Hungarian Regent Miklós Horthy to commemorate those who participated in the First World War.

The medal is made of silver-plated bronze and features the Hungarian coat of arms on the front, with the Holy Crown of Hungary surrounded by a wreath of oak and laurel leaves. The inscription "PRO DEO ET PATRIA" (For God and Fatherland) appears at the top of the medal, while the years "1914-1918" are visible on the reverse. Because the medal was awarded to combatants at the front, two crossed swords are depicted below the coat of arms. The ribbon is red, white, and green, the national colors of Hungary.

The medal was also awarded to German soldiers who fought on the Eastern Front.
