This medal was instituted on May 26, 1929 by the Hungarian Regent Miklós Horthy to commemorate those who took part in the First World War.

The medal is made of silver-plated bronze and features the Hungarian coat of arms on the obverse with the Holy Crown of Hungary, surrounded by a wreath of oak and laurel leaves. The inscription "PRO DEO ET PATRIA" (For God and Country) appears at the top of the medal, while the dates "1914-1918" appear on the reverse. Because the medal was awarded to combatants at the front, two crossed swords are depicted below the coat of arms. The ribbon is red, white, and green, the national colors of Hungary.

The medal was also awarded to German soldiers who fought on the Eastern Front.
