"Signaal" was a cleverly compiled and richly illustrated fortnightly war narrative with exciting battle stories and alluring color photographs. Yet Signaal is more than just a remarkably fine magazine. With its twenty translated editions and a total circulation of over 2.5 million copies, Signaal was the most widely read magazine in Europe during the Second World War. Ultimately, 111 issues of Signaal were published. The first issue appeared in April 1940 and the last in March 1945. It was published in various languages and distributed in Norway, Sweden, Denmark, the Netherlands, Belgium, France, Spain, Portugal, Poland, Russia, Hungary, Croatia, Romania, Bulgaria, and even a reduced English version, which was flown across the Channel by the V-Weapon. Until December 1941, the English edition was also available in the USA. It was through this prestigious magazine that a large part of the territories occupied by Nazi Germany came into contact with National Socialism for the first time.
