Luftwaffe Kopfhaube (aviator's cap) without microphone and headphones – WWII
During the Second World War, German Luftwaffe pilots wore special Kopfhauben – leather or cloth flight caps – as part of their standard equipment. These caps protected against the cold at high altitudes and served as carriers for communication equipment. However, versions without an integrated microphone or headphones also existed, intended for specific functions or circumstances.
Characteristics of the "silent" Kopfhaube
A Kopfhaube without a microphone (Kehlkopfmikrofon) and headphones (Hörer) was simpler in design and was used in situations where communication equipment was redundant or had been transferred to another crew member.
Usage
Usually worn by passengers , ground personnel during test flights , or crew members who did not require direct communication, such as a flight engineer or observer.
Sometimes also used during training flights , or by the crew of aircraft where only one person actively communicated with the ground or with other aircraft.
A must for every Luftwaffe collector.
